at an event yesterday I saw quite a few balloons let go and they went up until they were too small to see. What happens to them? Do they leak and fall to earth or keep going?

They pop because the pressure is much higher up in the atmosphere, causing the balloon weight to collapse upon itself. They won't make it into space.

Some could pop, others come back down. That is how weather balloons work.

To the posters who said that they pop; why do you answer questions that you know nothing about? So helium balloons always pop huh? Well it must be a miracle then that I have launched dozens of helium balloons with self addressed envelopes that have been mailed back from hundreds of miles away where the balloon was found sometimes intact but deflated.
Idiots.

the reply demands more advantageous files. as an social gathering, the balloon's optimal altitude might want to anticipate the balloon's bursting quantity, weight, initial fill quantity, launch altitude and temperature. Balloon's burst at more advantageous altitudes by actuality the gas interior expands by actuality the atmospheric rigidity decreases (by sensible aspects in altitude), so as immediately as you've your initial files, a extremely precise answer would precise be fairly calculated.

They pop, because the air pressure decreases the higher the baloon goes up, the helium inside is pushing against the insides of the baloon, and the outside air is pushing back. When the air is thinner, the helium wins and "pops" out of the baloon;-)

It will continue to travel up until bouyance is met. They also leak so will eventually fall back to earth. Of coarse if they are very full (near bursting) the lower air pressure at higher altitude may cause them to burst. Sort of everything you said really except they will move to a maximum hight then stop.

as they go higher, the atmospheric pressure decreases, which causes the helium to expand, and the ballon will pop.
