use the original cd, format your hard drive. install to new.

Sounds like you have the disk but it keeps booting into windows anyway?
If so you need to get into the BIOS
On Dell machines you normally need to press F2 during the early part of the boot sequence
Other manufacturers have different keys - but its quite often the del key
Once in there you are looking for the boot option
You want to set the CD as the first choice...

Download a freeware program that will let you burn and create a bootable cd that will erase all data on your hard drive. If you search google for "Hard Drive Erase Bootable CD" you will find many results. These programs are great because if your system contracted a serious virus, it will destroy all evidence of the virus (assuming it did not invade your motherboard's BIOS)
Once your drive is wiped, you can insert your new bootable windows cd and re-install.

instead of activating and doing the serial code thing just put the windows cd in the computer start up but press f12 before it starts windows and follow instructions on replacing copy or removing copy and repartitioning.

you need to start pc with the origional xp disc in, formatt "c"...or you can do a repair... and have you tried system restore... also virus scan your pc. in case one has got in and causing trouble.....
