There is nothing worse when meeting someone for the first time then that awkward silence after greeting each other. Kick the silence into orbit. Here's a few conversation starters:

If you want to start a conversation with a girl you've never met, stay away from the dirty talk. Good conversation material is stuff like movies, music, and jobs. But avoid being overly negative. A little bit once in a while is okay, because you're human, but other than that you're just b1tching about stuff, yanno? good luck!

The conversation has to revolve around something relevant to the situation you are currently in. For example, if you are at a bar, you could talk about how crowded it is in the bar, or talk about how hot it is. Hopefully in her answer she will give you some kind of clue or keyword where to direct the conversation.

For example, if she says, "Yeah, its frigging hot in here", you could say, "Yeah, I hate overheated bars too, summer is so warm in this town, what do you do to stay cool?". etc.

The idea is to talk about open ended subjects that can let your conversation develop and evolve so you constantly have something to talk about and you learn more about the person you are talking to.

Some things to avoid are topics or questions that could result in a one word answer. "yes" and "no" doesn't lead to good conversation. If someone is responding to your statements with one word answers they may not want to be in a conversation with you. However, if they volunteer new information don't be afraid to follow up on it - they just might be interested in talking to you more.
