I grind my teeth and am NOT stressed. I have the lowest of low blood pressure, and do not worry about things. But I grind teeth to the point where I have cracks in all my molars, which means very expensive crowns to fix the teeth. My dentist made me a special device to wear at night to try to protect my teeth from further damage.

I recall asking my dentist about teeth grinding and how to stop it, and he said a mouth splint is really the only protection. During the night the teeth can shift side to side and every which way, and they do since our jaws relax so much.

Intense dreams can affect grinding, as can stress, as can tmj. There is no one cause from what my dentist told me.

It is stress and it damages teeth. Your dentist can custom make a guard for you to wear to bed to prevent the grinding.

I think most people grind their teeth as a way to cope with stress. I'm pretty sure most people don't even realize they are doing it.

Good question. I never even knew I did it, until I started getting pain in my teeth and gums and went to the dentist. Now I am aware I do it, and I can't figure out why I do it.
