three and a half is good time to start if you haven't already
go thru the alphabet, only 1 letter per day at most:
1. teach child the letter, CAP and lower case, they learn the name of the letter.
2. have child run finger (on hand they will write with) over letter. explain/show child how to do this ("top to bottom" "this is a closed letter" "this is an open letter" "this has all straight lines" etc.)
3.provide letters for child to trace (you can write them with a highlighting marker). child should have fat toddler crayons or washable markers to work with.
good luck!

Hi,
It's really depends on the kids mental and phycial development. Normally, some of the kids can use pen to write during 3 and some of them until 4. Maybe, you can let your child to draw some simple line at the beginning. If your child like it and control the hand movement well. You can start the writing program for her. It's not too late... Take it easy!

Usually by 2 or 3, kids have enough strength in their little hands, to hold a pencil or pen and move it the way they need to. Trying to have them write before that is futile and could hurt their little fingers.

Yes, IF they are intersted and are physically able to hop on one foot. Don't ask me why, but it is one of those markers that help with readiness. Just don't push your child if they are not ready yet. That could do more harm than good. Our daughter was 3 and wanted to know how to "draw" her name.
