Mmm, in the interest of not be too offensive, I wont say we're the "smartest" no. But I do agree that the average atheist knows a lot more about religion than the average theist. My theory, I just discussed in another question, is that the more you learn about science and, indeed, religion, the less likely you are to believe. It's not that being atheist makes you gain more knowledge, it's that he knowledge you gain makes you more likely to be an atheist.
And not at all, Poetic, we'd be off answering actual questions, instead of here being pissed off by non-questions like "I love jesus, everyone should love jesus?" Actual "question" by the way, sad as it is. On the other hand, what would *you* be doing if it weren't for atheists? You are, after all, the one who came to this atheist's question about atheism to answer it.

I'm not sure where you're finding answers from professed atheists that display accurate knowledge about religion or science. What I've seen are rambling tirades about passages taken out of context and science such as was NOT taught at USC when I was out there. Guess I've just been tuning in at the wrong times. Late note for Morgan: I hold an MSEE and was deeply involved in aerospace for a number of years. Unlike your theory, the more I learned about science and nature, the more I believed in God. Perspective, perhaps?

Marx said " religion is the opiate of the people" It was created 2 find order in society. Dogmatic religion VS. faith/spirituality, different things....however Atheists seem 2 lump them all 2gether.
And in doing so have given up the peace that comes with believing in something greater than yourself......hope, faith....like believing in Santa (the joy it brings) ...science may tell us he doesn't exists but ur soul needs 2 believe and in rejecting that i find the personalities of Atheists are more pessimistic about life than the believers who hold a more optimistic perspective on life. Atheists have used thier fear of being controlled 2 strip the magic from thier lives and thier belief system.

Yes, very true. True atheists (the ones sincerely involved in it) are the smartest. They know more about religion than the religious people. And if they keep at it intensely, they are likely to achieve the true purpose of religion earlier than the religious people !

Mankind has always used God as an explanation for what it doesn't understand. It is only natural that as new discoveries are made and human understanding grows, God becomes increasingly unnecessary.
To rayk469: I hold an MSEE and was deeply involved in artificial intelligence for a number of years. Unlike your theory, the more I learned about science and nature, the more I believed that God is completely irrelevant. Perspective, perhaps?

Atheists are a lot more open to logic than blind faith, which is something to be admired.
However, I don't like how some think that all religions should be abolished. That basically tells me they're trying to tell everyone what is right and what is wrong - that should strictly be a Christian thing, in my opinion.

It is because, athiest honestly have found more out. ( Am speaking in general of course.) Because when you search for something(or at least myself) you tend to find out all you can about it. Because the church, does not spend enough time teaching the basis of their theology. And most people are too damn lazy, or too stupid. To go and read a few books or do some research. This is why so many people are leaving the church and going to other places. They have no basis in the philosophy of their own beliefs.

Depends.
Some really fanatical religious types can quote chapter and verse on the bible, scriptures, whatever and seem really knowledgeable, but only because they learn by rote.
Some atheists like to actually do research and find out the reason why somethings are that way.

Atheists do not believe in any god of any type. I, myself am agnostic. An agnostic doesn't believe in god, but doesn't believe in not believing in a god. They are just, confused really, and open for discussion, like me. I want to be convinced. I want to be a Christian, but there are just so many tough questions that Christians cannot answer. Questions like "God gives us the freedom of choice. Freedom of choice to believe in any religion we wish. But if God knew what religion we would choose before we were ever created, did we ever really have a choice." Another question: "Jesus calls out to us everyday. He wants us, agnostics and atheists, to be Christians. He gives us opportunities to give our lives to him and accept salvation. Sure, maybe in the U.S. But what about the Hindu man in India? Or the Buddhist man in Indonesia? These people don't even know who Jesus of Nazareth is! Sadly, it seems, these people who don't have access to accepting salvation. But my spoiled ***, here in the U.S. of A. gets to deny him and shove him away all I want. If his way is the only way, then why am I shoving him away while others never get the chance to accept him?

if you really want the truth then i will say that this is wrong, unless you belive that athiests evolved from the average human into a smarter kind. matter of fact, i see that the athiests are not the smartest but on the other hand the most sarcastic. please dont generalize, because this is an impression that you seem to be getting personally.
