A school with full time instructors that maintains a training syllabus that will keep the student moving forward in training, this may also involve a means to help the student with applying for financial aid or a student loan to make sure that economics will not interfere with a regimented training program. Good up to date equipment that is professionally maintained. Try to stick with the same instructor during any given part of your training, this may take some creative scheduling.

This is 2006, so learn how to fly out of a controlled airport so you will feel comfortable working in the ever expanding world of air traffic control. [ this is subject to the type of flying you anticipate doing in your future]

Check the schools credentials with other pilots in your area, check with the FAA about the number of students that have completed their training.

You want professional training from someone whom wants to teach you instead of getting an hours instruction fee from you to offset there own flying expenses.

Coming home safely at the end of the day always qualifies as a good flight, but I think there's much more to a good flight school. Shop around and visit different operations, even at different airports. How are the facilities? What is the general condition of the airport? What do you think about their fleet of training planes? Speak to the flight instructors. Are there any you could get along with? Be sure to do plenty of research (including associated costs!) before you make a decision. You'll be spending a lot of money during flight training, and you have every right to make sure that your money is going to the right places.
