Muslims actually have MANY holy cities.... Mecca and Jerusalem are merely the two most holy (Mecca #1, Jerusalem #2).

The Dome of the Rock is in Jerusalem it is a holy site in Islam. It sits atop the the hill where Jesus ascended to heaven after the cruicifiction in the city of David. The city and indeed the region hold spiritual significance for three religions.

Muslims seldom mention Christianity in conjunction with Jerusalem because of the Crusades. The Crusaders liberated the city and killed vast numbers of people. When the Islamist retook the city, they shed no blood.

There was plenty of blood shed by both sides during the Crusades but Jerusalem was a "black eye" for the Christian cause.

FYI, the Koran teaches Jesus was a phrophet and those who follow Him are brothers to the followers of Muhammed.

WELL, it was Jerusalem the sacred holy place during the earlier stages of Islam until GOD lifted the prophet MOHAMED (pbuh) to heaven for one night showed him around heaven and hell then instructed him to change prior direction to Mecca and since then all the Muslims prays to the direction to Mecca (EAST) where sun rises.

So Jerusalem is considered a holly place too due its earlier role in early Islam also note the Medina city located approx. 450 km from Mecca where prophet MOHAMED (pbuh) is buried there to be the second holy place to be visited. But regarding prayers all Muslims of the world must head towards East where Mecca is located, noting that Australia, Japan, China Muslims for example must pray towards West as Mecca located West Australia. People in high North pray to South too. U understand the point.

Thanks for your Question.

We have 2 Holy Places in Islam. However, they are Mecca and Medina. Not Jerusalem, as many people would claim.

Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and it is holy as it contains the most holy Mosque; the Kaaba. where Millions of Muslims every year go to do Pilgrimage.

Medina, is where the Prophet (Salallahu alayhi wa sallam) Migrated to, when conditions were very harsh for the Muslims to be there to practice their Islam freely.

Allah Will continue to Protect these 2 cities until the end of times.

Proof for these 2 holy sites are found in the statements of 2 of the greatest Islamic Scholars of all times who said;

Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“There is no holy place (Haram) on earth, not Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) or anywhere else, apart from these two holy places (i.e., Makkah and Madeenah). No other place should be called Haram (sanctuary, holy place), as the ignorant speak of Haram al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) or Haram al-Khaleel (in Khaleel, Palestine), for these places and others are not Harams, according to the consensus of the Muslims… There is no dispute among the Muslims concerning any third holy place apart from Dujj, which is a valley in al-Taa’if…”

(Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 26/118).

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen confirmed that this (Dujj) is not a holy place. (al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 7/248).

Wallahu ta'ala alem (and Allah knows best)

They have several holy places actually. The most important ones are Makkah, Medina and Jerusalem. When Muslims controlled Jerusalem, everyone was allowed to visit and infact jews, christians, muslims and druze lived in Jerusalem. Jerusalem according to Islam is considered special because makkah and medina are important only to Muslims but Jerusalem is important to a few religions so everyone would be allowed to go there.

Now , let me tell you what is a Holy place in Islam:

Masjed = is the place where Muslims perform their prayers.
Mekkah = is the right name for the Ka'ba and place of birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Mecca= is the name made by English people as an insult for our greatest holy place. Look it up in the dictionary please.

First: Al Masjed Al Haram in Mekkah, that is Al Ka'ba and the e Masjed around Al Ka'ba

Second: Al Masjed Al Nabawi in Al Madenah, that is the Masjed which was built initially by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Third: The Dome of the Rock in Al Qudss ( Jerusalem) , as it is the place from which Prophet Muhammad ascended to the Sky and to visit all the prophets of Allah and had a look at Heaven and Hell-fire. Also, it is the place were Prophet Muhammad lead all other Prophets of Allah in a prayer.

Forth: Each and every Masjed on earth, is a holy place for Muslims.

As for celebration in Mekkah, it is the pilgrimage which is done every year and a Muslim is supposed to perform it once , at least , in his life, if he could, health and money wise.

Mecca may be the holiest place for Muslims, but Jerusalem is also very important. It's like saying you have a mother, so why bother with your father.

Christians make up a very small proportion of the Israeli population and they also don't run the government or set policies. Jesus was one of many important prophets recognized by Muslims, but he is not considered the son of God nor their messiah.

Jerusalem is Holy place for Moslims because it used to be their "QIBLA"(the place towards which they face while prayers).Mecca was declared as Qibla afterwards.

They have several Holy cities, Medina comes to mind. They are a little possessive about what they hold dear.
