when i lived in europe years ago gas was 5$ a gallon then! diesels have been very popular for years everywhere, but the usa. i am an engineer so these things interest me. simply by nature a diesel engine of the same size is 30 to 40% more efficient than agas engine and their longevity is two fold. i have been waiting for years for someone to build a small or medium size truck with a diesel in the usa, but so far no good. some diesel hybrids are capable of getting 70mpg real world mileage not like the prius hype!!!!!!!!

You are so right...I am in the UK and my car is an Audi A4 1.9TDI Avant. It's the first diesel I have bought and I would never go back to using a petrol car. My last car was a Subaru using unleaded fuel. With the Audi I can get around twice as much mileage to the gallon as the Subaru...even when towing my caravan....of course if I went a little slower I would get even more!

Our fuel here is now around 95.9p per LITRE. Convert that to imperial gallons making it around £4.38 a gallon. Convert £1 to $1 = 1.82 making it $7.96 a gallon.......OUCH!

Not until all of the US conforms with the low sulfur diesel requirements. (Most diesels are so dirty, they cannot be sold new in CA emission states.) And then I'd probably only think of it if I found a good source of biodiesel.

I'm still waiting for the diesel/electric hybrids to get out of the concept stage and maybe actually get into production...

Most definitely..

I currently drive a diesel Mercedes, excellent reliable vehicle.

Its saved me money both on fuel costs and maintenance costs.

Also, another bonus to diesel vehicles is that they can naturally accept Biodiesel, with little to no modifications (all that usually needs to be changed is the fuel filter)
