Vera Kraft Noble
Aug. 18, 1907 - July 14, 2005
WATERVALE - Vera Kraft Noble, of Watervale, died Thursday morning, July 14, 2005, at The Maples.
She was born Vera Elsa Kraft in Chicago, the second child and second daughter of Vera Becker Kraft and Frederick William Kraft. She grew up in Rogers Park, Ill.
Vera graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1930, where she and her sisters, Emma Kraft Trense and Jane Kraft Crosher, were members of Delta Gamma Fraternity.
While at the University, she met her beloved husband of 52 years, Vernon Haven Noble. During her first year of teaching in Gilman, Ill., Vera was in a horrific car and train accident, from which she barely survived.
Vera was a woman of charm and humor, great intellect and talents, and many contradictions, with a heroic will to live. She knew volumes of poetry and songs from both World Wars, old hymns, Stephen Foster songs, and musicals. She was the family storyteller, keeping oral traditions not only of a happy childhood in Chicago, but all the tales connected to the family's arrival in Watervale.
Following Dr. Oscar Kraft's purchase of the deserted lumber town in 1917, the family came by boat from Chicago and buckboard from Frankfort 88 years ago this summer. She was there as the ruins of the houses became the cottages of today, as the family gathering place became almost instantly a resort. She picked cherries in the nearby orchards, played at the Putney Corners Store, and across Lower Herring Lake with her friend Grace Collins Porter.
Vera and her sister Emma carried milk and eggs from the nearby Mortenson Farm and were ambushed by their brother Freddy and cousin Oscar. She knew all their neighbors around Lower Herring Lake, so many of whom helped in the renaissance of Watervale.
In 1933, Vera and Vernon Haven Noble were married in the Cecelia Cottage, and that night the barn with all the guests' cars burned down.
In 1960, Vera and Vernon bought Watervale from Dr. Oscar, and from then to the early 1980s worked toward its preservation. Through her generosity, Watervale donated the largest private conservation easement on Lake Michigan, forever preserving the place she loved so long and so well.
Vera was a member of the Lakeside Literary Society, the First Congregational Church of Frankfort, the Benzie Historical Society, and was an early volunteer at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents; beloved aunt, Hanna Kraft; her dear husband; sister-in-law, Dorothy Noble Brooks; younger sister, Jane Kraft Crosher; and her brother Dr. Frederick William Kraft, Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Emma Cecelia Kraft Trense; cousins, Oscar Kraft, Walter Paul Kraft Jr., and Magdalene Kraft Duncan; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Noble Tomeraasen; three children, Vera Jo Noble (Ted) Bahry, Dori Noble Turner and Vernon Haven (Mary Lou) Noble Jr.; son-in-law, Joe Thornton Turner; eight grandchildren, Kelly Jo Bahry, Thorn Turner, Peter Noble (Bliss) Turner, Jennie Johanna Turner (Rick) Schmitt, Thomas Frederick (Hilary) Turner, Sharon Noble (Frank) DeBonis, JoAnn Noble (Scott) Stewart and Angela Noel Noble; and 11 great-grandchildren, Alex and Laura Turner, Shane, Juliana, and Serafina Turner, Bennett and Cecelia Schmitt, Sophie Jane Turner, and Trenton, Elaine, and Jacqueline DeBonis.
The family grieves her death but can now begin to celebrate her loving and productive life. They are so grateful to the staff of The Maples, who took such good care of her.
In lieu of flowers, those so desiring may make contributions to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy Coastal Campaign, or the First Congregational Church of Frankfort.
The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff-Jowett Funeral Homes & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
