Hello,

Both are right. They both are used in different situation. The first is very, well it can be used in most situation, while th esecond is very specific.

But if i had to choose it would be the first one, because you are asking yourself what is someone's action. since you already know he's thinking, what you really want to know is what is he thinking about ?

Fantastic....a room full of...ok just answer the question......"About is a preposition to which you did not assign the remainder of the phrase......the prepositional phrase. It is generally considered a poorly constructed sentence when someone ends a sentence with a preposition. It is often best to ensure that you follow that pesky preposition with a phrase, a prepositional phrase. Now, with that being said....I challenge you all to find the rule that states you can't end a sentence with a preposition. Back to the question. Two would be my choice.

Both. one is the subject matter of the thought, two is the act of thinking.
