Probably a digital SLR, the Canon Rebel XT or one of the two from Nikon. They are all in the $750+ price range.

6 - 8 MP, file saves in RAW (bit map) and JPEG, 32 bit color instead of 24 bit color. Far better lenses. Interchangable lenses. Optical reflex viewing to conserve battery power.

for digital you need to decide a price range
cf card---80
card reader(you'll need it for the computers where your studing)---20
bag---40-80
if slr cleaning kit----20
photo software---30-500
camera---500-1500
additional lens---depends on what u shoot

if its sports or u need a shallow DOF for artistic look the lenses will be even more money(good ones 700-1800)

to much money....get canon s3 or sony h2
need smaller compact...canon sd700, fuji f30m, oly sp350 is a good deal for the price

can you discribe better in a comment what you are shooting and your price range

I think Kodak is a really good brand. I have had 2 digital cameras of theirs and I can take various types of pictures. The camera also holds up very well. Just depends on how much you pay for it and the quality of the camera.
