My Best friend had a three and a half year old that used to always poop his pants intill he was almost four . I used to think she must be doing something wrong, because I had two other children who were almost totally trained by one and a half. Intill my third child he would not stop I didnt know what to do and I was kinda embrassed thinking people are gonna think the same thing I did about my bestfriends child. The best advise I can give is when he does go poppy cheer him on like he just won the final game, keep him on the potty for awhile every few hours even if he says he doesnt have to go and tell him how proud youll be when he is a big boy and goes by himself like big people dont worry it will be soon he'll be going on his own

First, switch him underpants, but let him put on a pull-up when he has to poop. (He should still sleep in pull-ups for a while, b/c it's very difficult for little ones to control their bladders while they are asleep!).
Second, let him wear the pull-up while he poops, but have him sit on the potty while he does it. Also, put a stool (no pun intended) under his feet for leverage while he's sitting. Also keep a "potty book" in the bathroom for him to look at while he waiting to poop. Empty the poop out of the pull-up and into the toilet, let him flush it down. Eventually, he will want to sit on the toilet without the pull-up. If you need to bride him to get to this last step (not food, but other stuff), I've read all over the Internet and various books that this is OK.
Good luck!

this can be tough. when my son was three i finally had him peeing on the toilet but still putting him in a diaper at night because he had frequent accidents while sleeping. he started only pooping first thing in the morning so he could go in his diaper. I bought him special toilet paper called kando. they are like a baby wipes for toddlers. they come in a little box with a flip top lid. i played up how these wipes were very cool but that they could only be used by big boys after they go poop in the potty. after about a week he was so anxious about wanting to use his big boy wipes that he went poop in the toilet and the rest is history. good luck

what worked with my son was rewarding him one candy to go and sit on the potty (i.e. Hershey Kiss) and he'd get 2 or 3 if he took care of business

Give him a sticker every time he does it right. When he has enough stickers, he gets a prize.
