Yahoo maps says: 199.3 miles Approximate Travel Time: 3 hours 4 min. (That would of course vary according to your actual departure and arrival destination)

But here is the problem. I have often found Yahoo (or any on-line maps) to be inaccurate.

The map shown in the link shows you going down I-69 to Indianapolis to I-465 then north on I-65.

That does not make any sense to me to go south to get north. That sounds like too much back tracking to me.

Being from this area (I grew up in Muncie) I would recommend taking State Highway 28 west to I-65. State Highway 28 is a decent road with minimal traffic congestion, and sure beats going trough Indianapolis. and is a considerably shorter route.

The on-line maps usually seem to be way off on the travel time estimate either being too high or too low. The route Yahoo maps shows would take at least 3 1/2 to 4 hours, and cost considerably more in gas, and with fuel prices that is the last thing any of us needs is to be driving further, or more than necessary.

I would estimate the route I recommended to be about a three hour trip.

I've driven this too many times. From Muncie to Gary, about 3 hours. Best way? I-69 to I-465 to I-65. Using those crummy state roads takes too long. Unless you are afraid of interstate driving, use the big roads.

I live in Lafayette, which would be along the interstate route that others have mentioned. It seems that people that I know who travel to and from Muncie suggest SR 28. It's shorter, but there are a few towns along the way, so I doubt that it's quicker. Given the bump up in speed limits, I agree that the interstate route is the way to go, but be prepared for traffic along I-465 on the north side of Indianapolis.
