i am a muslim believer but i am totally against the idea of women wearing the veil. 50 years ago in my country, women used to be more modern, and very few of them wore the veil (aka the hegab). Nowadays, no matter how hard you look, you can't find a muslim woman walking in the street without one. I find that sad. I mean, the Qur'an never ordered us to hide our hair with a cloth! All that was asked from us was to wear decent, non provocative clothes, and not to show too much flesh.. it's a pity.. what do you think?

in many cases the veiling has become a political symbol not a religious one.

you should read some of what Nilufer Gole has to say. She is a sociologist from Turkey. I read in the spring The Forbidden Modern: Civilization and Veiling.

Actually, the reason 4 the veil is to keep everyone from standing out as beautiful so the don't get raped, so here in the USA, it would be something like a ponytail that would make sense, but veils are fine too. Maybe women use a veil now to say "Back off, I'm with Al Qaeda" or something. jk. But I'm a Muslim 13 year old, so I don't know how women think about wut 2 wear, but every women in my family wears a hijab (veil) and they all started by choice, and I know a lot of ppl start by choice.

I believe that Muslim females look fabulous with their veil. I have never been in no Muslim countries and I am not a Muslim. In the USA they don't need to use the veil but still females use it and they feel proud of who they are. I don't think it should be banned from Arab Countries because it will be like loosing their culture.
Now, if we are going to talk about ethics, who can tell us that the way we live and dress is the correct one and they are incorrect?
Society is what moves us around and we follow.

Now, I'm not Muslim, by far, but my World History teacher was and his wife was also. His wife wore the hijab (check your spelling next time). I asked him once if she HAD to wear it and he said no. He said she wears it because she feels that she should. She believes that a woman's hair is special and it creates feelings in men that should only be felt by her husband. She wears it because she wants to, not because she has to.

In other countries, the government FORCES the women to wear the veil. Yes, some would wear it anyway, but many of the women only wear it to obey the law enforced. In other words, they wear it to protect their life.

If you want to complain about "the veil taking over Arab countries" then go read up on corrupt Arab governments. That should give you some answers. Maybe if you weren't so ignorant, you wouldn't attack innocent Muslim women that are terrorized everyday.

I am not a Muslim, but I find it sad too. If the Quran does not order you to wear these garments, it is men who impose it. I find it hypocritical and pathetic that because men cannot control themselves, women should suffer for it. If there is no religious reason to wear the veil, then I think Muslim women should rebel and organize a day when they all take off their head coverings and burn them in the streets, the way women in the U.S. burned their bras in the late 60s or early 70s. Perhaps it is time for them to physically and symbolically say, "We are no longer willing to be silent, invisible, oppressed, second-class citizens."

Just by reading this question it tells me you are a true non practising believer or ( LACKING IN KNOWLEDGE). Even if you do know of the religion or born into it does not constitute you a believer.
It is also sad you only know the word Qur'an but not the content of it. Seek and you shall find, Being blind is as good as being dead.
If you choose to lead a Western ways of lifestyle then its entirely your prerogative but don't criticised others sister's that chooses to walk on the right path. Good luck to you.

This is just another example of how a man made religion makes its own rules.
Islam is a wicked religion that only wants to dominate. The very word Islam means submission. There is nothing at all good about Islam, their god is a wicked and violent god, their prophet mohammed was a voilent and wicked child abuser, and there is no hope of salvation either. a muslim does not know if he will ever get to heaven and he never gets a chance to know his god.
Women are forced into purdah and it is a DISGRACE!
But the men are allowed to beat their wives and this is a command in the wicked quran, and they are also allowed to have sex with their baby girls from birth.
Come out of Islam i would urge you, look at the real God of love we have in Jesus, he loved us enough to die for us. What has your god done for you? Not a lot it seems you are the ones striving to please a faceless moon god.

I'm not a Muslim and everything I see about Islam is very negative. It's degrading to women, intolerant of outside thought, breeds the most hideous forms of humans, and destroys the countries where it is dominant. I don't know any Muslims personally, so I wonder what attracts people, particularly "decent, nice" people, to that religion.

I think its out of fear. When its forced...
I think it reflects an extremist and sexist point of view from men who lust for control and power and do not respect women as equals, different but equally necessary. Like the yin and yang.

I believe that you should not be ashamed of your hair or your face but if your wear your veil because you like it and it makes you feel good then I respect your wish to wear it wherever you wish, or not.

I feel that Muslim women should not be discriminated against. They should be free to wear their veil if they want without people staring, or whispering. Just because you believe differently culturally and religiously I think you should have the freedom to do so.

Blessings...

Unfortunately Islam has the same problem that all religions have. They are ran by lecherous old farts who couldn't get laid if they paid for it. Many of the "rules" have nothing to do with what the founder beleived. Usually rules concerning women have to do with the idea that men CANNOT control themselves and it is womens fault!!! Christians at one time thought that the sight of a woman's hair was reason enough to justify rape, same as Islam.
