When I travelled throughout East Africa by bus, the bus stopped at EVERY border. We could not pass into the next country without a visa, which we bought at the border. Money helps, but you might as well get the visas, if there is any problem, they check the visa out first. I was mugged in Stonetown Zanzibar and the police were anxious to see my visa and my passport.
The trip will be an adventure, just be sure that you are prepared and safe. Good Luck

Good Luck. Money gets most of us out of tight spots. Careful how much you flash around trying to get from one country to another.
Have fun though. An adventure like this comes less often than you might think.
