I've been studying vocab words, but it is so tedious and they aren't sticking in my head!

When taking your test, double check your answers as you go, unless you begin to see this will not allow you to finish. This will probably save you time, instead of having to reread everything, and will also keep you aware of how you are progressing time wise. Also check the instructions to see if their are actual deductions for wrong answers-if you run out of time and randomly answer the last ones it might statistically detract from your score. A lot of post-high school tests do that.

Sure it's tedious, but they will stick in your head if you use one of these two techniques. The technique I use is to write down on a sheet of notebook paper about 7 words with the definitions. I cover the paper with a blank piece of paper exposing the first word and try to recall the first word. If I miss, I start again. I then go on to the 2nd word. If I miss I start at the first word again. If I get it right, I go on to the 3rd word. The 2nd technique is from Harry Lorayne's Memory Book. Break the word down into syllables and make up a story from the syllables or words that sound like the syllables. I didn't miss a single vocabulary word when I took the GRE. Get a hold of all the sample tests that the GRE people sell and take all of the tests. Buy every prep book you can find and use all of them. Go to workshops on how to prepare for the GRE. I went to one put on by my college. It was $50. Don't spend much more unless you can afford it. Barron's and Arco put out the two best test prep books. There was a new one coming out that taught guessing techniques. Get all of them. If you study enough, you will do well. My SAT's were 1340. My GRE's were 1450. Good luck.

of course GRE vocab is a difficult task. You should not work on vocab in one. But you should divide the work of memrizing vocab. Do other sections as well. Vocab will give you minimum score as compared to other sections. When you'll work all sections the vocab will be easy, as it is applied in sentence correction and reading comprehension sections.
GRE need a sound planning varing student to student. Plane its study. Explore your strengths and weeknesses.

There are numerous books out there with practice tests. If you can't afford them, check with your college library. Try the Princeton book. Then practice, practice, practice!
