Through our schooling and education--by our parents, by our teachers, by the media-- we are taught that what others think of you matters more than what you think of you... Everything has a rhetorical purpose and in rhetoric, the only thing that matters is how something is received by the reader.

Same goes for clothes, shoes, hair, intelligence, humor, love, social relationships, same goes for life.

What you think of you is often wrong anyway, nobody knows the real person underneath the facades they wear, but you are what you do on a regular basis. You care about what others think of you dear, because that's the way others (the media and others outside the family) want it to be.
Nobody can influence you, if you don't care what they think.
None of the ads with the skinny chick talking about fitting into those jeans so you can "fit into that lifestyle" would work if the media and the secular world hadn't trained you from a young age to care what others think of you.

Maybe you care so much about what others think because you don't yet know for sure how you want to be. Or maybe you feel powerless to make things happen for yourself and you think that other people's have to approve of you before you can get what you want.

Give yourself a chance to enjoy being you and don't worry so much about those other people!

Yup, it's because you're normal human being. We can't help it. Even people who say they don't care what others think of them really do care. They're just better at suppressing those thoughts.

Other people have the ability to impact every facet of your life regardless of the naysayers who say not to let it bother you. If a co-worker doesn't like you, they can campaign to have you fired. If your neighbors don't like you, they can make your home environment very difficult to stay. If your family is upset with you, they can demolish your self-esteem. We are told not to think about it or to ignore it, but the reality is the world is based on facades and people's snap judgments can turn our lives upside down.

if you care about other people, than naturally you will care for what the think of you, you want to portray the best posative image, not effected by outside influances such as material possesions but what the person really is.

Because your insecure...In American society you are brainwashed into caring what other think and living up to un atainable standards...but don't bother stressing yourself on what people think because someday they will all be dead...that always gives me comfort..knowing that no matter what anyone has or wears or does...they will be dead just like me.
