~Save your money. School won't do squat for you if you don't know the land and game patterns where you intend to guide. Hook up as a peon in a working operation and apprentice your way up.

i live in southeast british columbia big game hunting is big business here. guides spend a lot of hours preparing for the hunting season, and very hard work. pay is good but what really makes the year is the tips that hunters leave them for a hunt. i know guys that had custom rifles given to them and one fellow that got a 10 000 tip from an austrian hunter after guiding him to a huge 6 point elk and a very nice full curl ram. one fellow i know spent a month all expenses paid ski trip to switzerland after treating his hunter well. just knowing where animals are is only half the battle, you have to have good people skills as well.

Preseason, lots of time in the field scouting spots, setting up stands lots of leg work
During season, guiding and caping, feeding, cooking,
After season in some areas all stands have to be taken down, I think the actual outfitter makes the good money, Guides may get a reputation after putting guys in good stands and getting tips..

You can make enough money to support yourself, but you have to be willing to take som guy you don't know, that you may not like, and show him a great deer that you have spent hours scouting on and watching, and allow him to shoot it and get the credit.
