it is coming time for me to set aside my childish behavior and take on the role of being a responsible adult, but it has become so difficult for me to let go of instant gratification. instead of being able to look at the big picture and do things to ensure a prolonged happiness, i give into quick fixes that relieve stress momentarly. i've indulged in my desires without holding back and now my will power is weak. so i have trouble following through with the tasks that i set out for myself, and it prevents me from enjoying my life to the fullest

This is an excellent question. I don't know how qualified I am to answer, because I struggle with the same kind of issues myself (my vices are sleeping in too late, overeating, and giving in to depression). It's hard to motivate myself.

I do have a couple of suggestions that I'm trying. First, every day do something that will make SOMEONE ELSE'S life a little better. You'll feel worthwhile when you've made someone else's day. Next, better yourself with interests that are good for you and fun, like taking care of animals, learning a skill, or taking a fun class (for example, I'm teaching myself how to sew, starting a garden, and learning the piano). Last, don't reward yourself until you've done the jobs you need to do first. I have a little chart with my chores and some star stickers, just the same as I set up for my kids, and I get a star every time I do a specific chore. I love sushi, so every time I get a certain amount of stars, I treat myself to a small order of sushi! LOL

If I could still be an irresponsible person, I think I would!!!!! It takes alot of charachter in someone to be an "adult". It is so hard for me to not go off on people, and bite my tongue, I can't tell you enough!
Somehow, being an adult has been a good thing. I don't miss partying on Bourbon Street every night, well, maybe only 40% of the time I don't miss it, lmao..........but I am looked at differently now....People respect me, and thats a really good feeling. People depend on me, and really count on me, it feels good being able to come through for them

If you aren't hurting yourself or anyone be childish......
If you can eat and live and be happy without these goals you set for yourself then go for it. Maybe you are setting your goals to high. Maybe your not ready to grow up yet.
Stop worrying over things and take one day at a time. Things will work out in the end. Setting high goals can cause a person to feel like a loser! Just chill and be happy.
☺

hullo
you have to find other ways of living the moment, gratification of instant needs and desires is not always the right thing to do,you should restrain your self sometimes, that is the function of the ego.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME BI-POLAR TENDENCIES AND MAYBE SOME UNDIAGNOSED ADD. GET YOURSELF TO A PSYCHIATRIST FOR AN EVALUATION, AS WELL AS A THERAPIST.TALK TO HIM ABOUT MAYBE TAKING SOME STRATTERA, A RELATIVELY NEW DRUG FOR ADULTS TO TREAT ADD. KEEP IN MIND THAT DEPRESSION OR BI-POLAR DISORDER ARE SEPARATE FROM ADD,AND THEY NEED TO BE ADDRESSED SEPARATELY. THERE IS NO MAGIC PILLS, THERAPY SHOULD ONLY BE THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF TREATMENT. GET HELP YOU WILL THEN SOON YOU WILL START TO FEEL BETTER.
