Dogs generally go in heat every 6 months (the period) and that is the mating season.

This depends on the dog, some come in to heat ( have period) as early as 6 months, others later. The heat cycle usually lasts for 3 weeks, 1 week coming into heat, 2nd week usually the best time to breed, and the 3rd week going out of heat.
It is generally the school of thought that the 2nd week of heat is the best time to mate a dog. It may take more than one time, generally mate the dog one day, then wait 2 days and have them mate again. It is done this way to give male dogs sperm time to reach higher levels. This can be done in this way for several days.
For large breed dogs such as German Shepard it is generally better to wait til she is at least 2 yrs old before breeding her. As she has not matured physically til that point. Also you want to have her checked for hip dysplasia before breeding her, so she does not pass this on to her pups.
Also have her checked for Bruccilosis( sp?) as this can cause miscarriage, and is transmitted during breeding. They will do a culture for this.

At about 6 moths of age, some dogs it a year old. It in 14 days in and 14 days out. On the 14 days out is when you mate her. But she should be a year old before you let her have a litter. At 6 months she , her self is still a baby. And it could harm her heath to mate her to young. Every one thinks a dogs live is 7yrs. to ours, when in truth. It is 2 yrs. the age , every six months.

German Shepherds are a short hair breed therefore there shouldn't be any problems with "matting"

the time when dogs go into "heat" or periods is usually around a year old and the best time to breed them is when their about 2 or 3 yrs. because by then they are mature enough to handle puppies because at a year old their just coming out of being a puppy themselves.

ok with dogs its not called periods. its called in heat and this is the time they get pregnate so if you want to breed her . she should come in heat the first time when shes about 6 months to a year old you dont want to breed her this first time because shes too young if it happens its ok just dont expect a good likely hood of the puupys living. you can breed her when she comes in heat the second time. if you need to know what to look for to know if she in heat email me and i will be glad to chat with you about it
