If singing is your passion why aren't you studying music/voice in college? It would seem that would be your best option. Option is the key word here...you want to allow yourself as many options as possible and getting a college degree can open numerous doors for you. It is also a matter of what you label as success. You should realize that there is a whole lot more to having a music career than just being a Top 40's recording artist. I have a friend who studied voice in college, she teachings lessons out of her home, performs in numerous plays around her area, has been in a few bands, and she is an opera singer. Do your research and get your degree. No one can ever take that away from you. If you aren't sure you could start out taking voice lessons and see how it goes. Also remember, the music bizz is all about rejection. You have to know how to take and turn it into something positive so it works for and not against you otherwise it will eat you alive!!

Finish what you have started my dear. There is nothing like a college degree. You will shape your mind which will help you reach better decisions. Although history and music aren't related, or if you are contemplating that knowledge you will get from history would'nt help you in music, the process of learning the course and sticking with what you have started will help you in the long run. I know how you feel , I have been there myself . I finished a dental degree and now, I sing professionally... I have followed my dream and at the same time, I finished school. It may be very difficult to tread on 2 rivers but nothing will overpower you if your determination is strong enough. I know quite a few people who have done the same thing. I didn't take up music coz I found it quite difficult to study music theory (judging from my elementary and high school years)...I also know quite a few people who studied music but have no gigs... I may have been left behind by my singing peers coz they started singing earlier than I did, but I know I can cope, and hold my head high and have something to fall back on.. Actually try to get some gigs now, while you are young, participate in contests, extra-curriculars...believe me you can do both!

Get your degree first. I am a 48 year old singer/guitarist. I'm really good, but getting gigs and making enough money to pay the bills has been tough for a long time. Now, at 48, I am going back to school to get some kind of marketable job skill. I will be done with my courses in September. It will be nice to get a regular job, with regular hours, and benefits like 401K and health insurance.
When you get your degree, get a good job. I am not telling you to quit singing. By all means, sing to your heart's content. But don't ever quit your day job!! Being hungry and homeless is no way to live your life until you "make it big".
I am not trying to discourage you in your dream of being a singer, but just be aware that there are ALOT of good singers out there. I know! Get your degree and a good job that can see you through the lean times, and you will do fine.

Finish college the singing has waited this long what's another few years. While you are finishing college you could be singing as a hobby, maybe take voice lessons from a professional. Get your diploma so you have something to fall back on if the music doesn't work out. Millions of people think they are singers.....very few ever make a living at it...but if you LOVE singing you'll be happy even if you are doing it at local fundraisers or in community theatre.

it depends honey...do you like waiting tables or cleaning hotel rooms or something? If you are gonna drop college to follow your dream, you have to be prepared to work hard at something else full-time and find a way to make that pay enough to support you while you are singing on the side. Consider also where you are living right now, are you in a major city with the potential to be discovered? if not, you should move, but for god's sake don't go to New York, everyone goes there to become famous. Ever heard that phrase "little fish in a big pond" it's true. i didn't finish school and i'm doing fine, but i work hard every day and i have worked my way through the ranks at the company i'm with. i sing well too, a lot of people do. getting famous is hard to do.

Do both. Pursue a singing career while still doing school. If the singing career takes off and you don't have time for school anymore, take a break for a while or go part time. An education is always valuable but it doesn't mean you can't do other things at the same time.

You don't say what your going to do with your history degree..Teach?...Whatever it is, it probably won't pay much, unlike if you were to get say, an engineering degree or computer science degree.Go for it now. If you crash and burn then go to college. Sometimes a college degree isnt as worth it economically as people think. But there are other intrinsics that you might want to experience, like studying with friends, going to football games and keggers at the fraternity house...etc.etc.....Cant you do a little of both?

I would say to continue your degree, but try to take vocal lessons and other music related classes at the same time as electives or audit them if you can't have too many credits. Learn some more about music; it's hard, and not too many succeed - even those with talent. No matter what though, always keep singing. Good luck.

I too have a dream of becoming a singer, and I dropped out of college one semester from graduating. i'm too fearful to persue my dream... I say finish your degree first! If anything should happen to fall through with your singing pursuit, you will always have that degree to fall back on, not to mention, having a degree will always look more impressive to those you audition for. It will show that you have exhibited good work ethic, and that you are worth more than just a good voice. Best of luck friend!

I don't see why you can't do both. Stay in college but go to auditions as well. If singing doesn't pan out or last you will have something to fall back on and if you need to fall back on it you will be glad you have it.
You could alway go to college during the day and sing at clubs or bars at night to make some tuition money - until you get discovered.
