There are some red dyes made from insects: cochineal, carmine, and carminic acid. Red #40 is bug-free (derived from coal).

Some red dyes are made out of the the dried crushed bodies of little red Australian beetles. I wish this wasn't true, but it is. It's called Carmine or Carminic "something." I know that it's in Good and Plenty Candy, and in lots of strawberry yogurt, like Dannon!! You can look it up yourself, but I promise it's true. It's also found in some make-up.
