Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922) was a Scottish-born scientist and inventor. He is still widely considered to be the foremost inventor of the telephone, although it's controversial now.
Some believe that Antonio Meucci was the "real" inventor (And in June 2002, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a symbolic bill officially recognizing Meucci for his contributions to the invention of the telephone). Others credit Elisha Gray, the founder of the Western Electric Manufacturing Company. (All these men independently invented a telephone.)
In addition to Bell's work in telecommunications technology (because his family worked with deaf people), he was responsible for important advances in aviation and hydrofoil technology, and developed the metal detector. Most of his work was done as a naturalized American.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. For a number of years Operators had to connect calls. Somewhere around the turn of the century, Mr. A. Strowger invented the telephone dial and switching device. Strowger was an undertaker and his major competitor's wife was the local telephone operator. He felt she was redirecting callers to her husbands business and taking business away from him so he invented the dial so callers would not have to use operators.

alexander graham bell patented the phone in 1875 or 1876. service through switchboards began shortly thereafter. if I remember my history, the first major phone service resulted from queen victoria using phone to talk to someone in england, but I may be a little off about that.
