17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) ammo has a 17 gr. hollow point (filled with polycarbonate) boat tail bullet with a 0.172" diameter and delivers a muzzle velocity of about 2550 fps (depending on the barrel length). There is 5.4 gr of what looks like Lil' Gun powder. The muzzle energy is 245 ft-lb and with a 1-10" twist, the bullet is spinning at 183,500 rpm. A typical 22 Long Rifle cartridge has a bullet weight of 40 gr. or more than twice the mass of the 17 HMR.

a .17 cal bullet is useless it is so fast that on a humid day it will disengrate as it comes out of the barrell and it wont kill anything bigger than a jack rabbit. You would be better off with a .22 cal rifle

A 17 cal bullet is pretty slow. I cant get a good grip on it when i throw it. Bigger bulets are easier to hold on to when you toss them. If by any chance though you are firing one from a loaded cartridge, then they are must faster. I personally like the .17hmr. Very quick and no kick.

well i know that the 17 mach 4 (a .221 fireball necked down to a .17 caliber) can reach up to 4800 fps but that is the fastest 17 calier that i know of. might be some faster wildcater rounds out there though

There are just too many variables involved to answer the question. Cartridge ? Rifle or pistol ? Barrel length ? Type of powder.? Amount of powder.?
In any event the .17 has never caught on because it has little if any practical application.
