I have asked a similar question a while ago, all what I received is people talking about how stoning to death is a wonderful punishment...etc.

Can anyone please cite the exact verse from Quran that states the punishment for people who commit adultery to be stoned to DEATH?

Does it change your conclusion any way. I shall have to look into the Quran to give exact answer. Is it worth? The fact remains that you have already accepted opinion of others that stoning is an excellent punishment. I respectfully differ from those persons because it is the most barbaric behaviour to kill a person by stoning. You are neither reforming him nor deterring others by such conduct; you are only satisfying the animal within you who has not reformed yet despite a human body.

However, the punishment is mentioned in the chapter dedicated to women in the Quran.

he first is Surah 17, Al Isra or Bani Israil, verse 32 - primarily about the Ascension of the Prophet but also purity in sexual relations and probity in all dealings:

Nor come nigh to adultery
For it is a shameful (deed)
And an evil, opening the road
(To other evils)

The second reference is in Surah 24 Al Nur, verse 2, and it speaks of the regulation of sexual behavior and reprobation of false slander against women:

The woman and the man
Guilty of fornication
Flog each of them
With a hundred stripes
And let a party of believers
Witness their punishment

It is this verse which has been subject of many interpretations although the words of the Quran could not have been clearer. It states that the punishment applies equally to men and women, and second that it comprises 100 stripes - not a single more or less.

Islam was a religion that was born in the Middle Ages. The Catholic Church ordered free-thinking women to be burned alive at the stake for being "witches." The Church also sent thousands of children to fight in the Children's Crusade and they all died. You have to put things into context.

I'm not saying that it's okay to stone people but you can't criticize one religion for something because every religion has had its moments.

If you consider orthodox Catholicism, orthodox Judaism and orthodox Islam--Islam has the most modern views. It is to this day the only religion out of the three that allows divorce. The Qur'an even guides divorcees on how to split up their possessions. It also allows women to be financially independent and to have a job. Prophet Muhammed's first wife Khadija even had a job as a successful business woman before she met the Prophet.

Allah has given punishment of few major sins only like 1. 100 lashes for single fornicators 2. 80 lashes for giving false witness 3. 80 lashes for accusing a pious female for having sex without four witnesses 4. Death punishment for apostate 4. Death punishment for married adulterers, rapists, child stealers, robers and murderers. I mention above punishment because in Shariah Laws Saudi government give the above punishments on the major crimes. I have lived in Saudi Arabia for two years. For rest of minor crimes, Allah has not written any thing in Quran and has left on the governments to enforce punishments as they seem fit. Jail terms for minor crimes are devised by legislative branch of the individual governments in Muslim countries also. .
