When you make an excuse you say that you were sidetracked and is there a handy excuse catch phrase like that in Japanese?

blackdog san arigatou osoru toki ni iiwake wa "I was sidetracked by xxx" to iou also you could say it as damasu to sidetrack a person. I am not sure my word in japanese correct.

Unfortunately, I don't know what 'sidetracked' means. I've looked into it in a dictionary and have got this.
sidetrack
distract somebody : to divert somebody from the original subject or activity
I think the appropriate translation is 'hagurakasu'.
