Lately I've been having some problems sleeping. Sometimes, lying there, I get real paranoid and start hearing noises in the house. I get so scared, I shut and lock my door. This would work great, except I've been told by family members that if I do this I will wake up in the middle of the night and start screaming that I've been locked in my room (I must be sleepwalking, since I do not ever remember these occurances). I dont know what to do, I cant sleep if my door isnt locked and shut, but I bother and wake up my family members if I do. I really dont want to have to sleep with a night light. What else can I do?

night frights are real common in people lately. I have some myself but have over come them natually, without a therapist or doctor. Mentally, you need to tell yourself what yourself want to hear. if yourself want the door locked, tell yourself the door is locked, without doing it. if you sleep walk, put up a baby gate just high enough that you cant physically open it when your asleep.
Since your hearing noises, which everyone does, some of them are real. (But it actually depends on what the noise sounds like)
the sounds that sound unrealistic, are deffinetally not really there. remember, tell yourself what you want to hear. they're not real and im just a little paranoid. anyways, my daughter has a night fright that when ever she goes to the bathroom something is going to come out of any drain to get her and kill her. she over came that by telling herself what she wanted to hear, nothing small enough that could fit up that drain couldn't kill her. if you need any more help, email me at doogledoggie@cox.net

If you are having trouble sleeping there is nothing wrong with using a small night light in your room - it might help you sleep better and also help your family not to have to wake up to you screaming in the middle of the night. Try it out - there is no shame in having a night light. This might just be a phase you are going through. You don't mention your age - but there is an herbal sleep remedy from Herbalife products and it's called "Sleep Now" - it's completely natural and non habit forming and works like a charm. If you are 18+ check it out and see if it's right for you, if you are underage have your mom check it out to see if you can take it.
If you continue having these paranoid episodes and a night light and/or a sleep helper doesn't work you should really see a doctor.

Perhaps it's time for you to seek professional help from a psychiatrist or at least a therapist. There may be some underlying reason for your sleep disturbances that they could help you figure out. You might need to persevere until you find the right person to match your needs.
If the thought of outside help doesn't seem your style then perhaps doing some free writing might help. Free writing is sitting down and writing anything that comes to your mind, without editing. It's amazing what starts to come out when you let it just flow. Sometimes it takes a few tries before it begins to work.
I wish you well.

Try watching an espisode of the Twilight Zone called "Nothing in the Dark"
"There was an old woman who lived in a room and, like all of us, was frightened of the dark, but who discovered in the minute last fragment of her life that there was nothing in the dark that wasn't there when the lights were on. Object lesson for the more frightened amongst us, in or out of the Twilight Zone"

this used to happen to me a lot. i agree with most of the posters about using a nightlight, it really could help. but you could also try some soothing music or a sound machine.
there is a chance with many sleep aids that they can cause the opposite and cause you to become hyperactive. unless you know how they'll affect you i wouldn't use them because the hyper-activeness can make the paranoia worse.

You need to talk to a doc.
Keep in mind Theat none of what you are experiencing is going to kill you. If you work on letting th anxiety wash over you and wait for it to pass you will be able to control it better.
On the other hand if you aren't able to do that you should see a doctor and he could prescribe something to ease your mind at night

sleep disorders are common ,you are complaining from night terror with hypnagogig state(hearing voices after retiring to bed).
you should try to figure out why you have such a problems, probably some unresolved issues in your unconscious?
i think you should see a psychiatrist first ,before taking any sleeping pills.
