You have had the dog for one year and not bothered to train him now he is strong and I imagine that he pulls on the lead and you find no pleasure in walking him.
Nothing wrong with the dog at all he is just doing what you have allowed him to do all the long - he is getting his own way!
A training class is the best as you will get profsessional help to train.
A choke chain is a brilliant piece of equipment in the right hands, but a very cruel one in the wrong hands. Sounds like you should NOT use a choke chain unless you are shown the correct way to use one.
For an easy way to get your dog to walk to heel there is (in the UK it is called a "Halti") it is like a horses halter and there are two straps, one goes just behind his ears and the other is a band round his muzzle. You connect the leash to a ring under the chin and the dog CANNOT pull with this on.
However perhaps you are having more problems than this, perhaps he wont come back to you when you call, if you email me I will advise you on training your dog. However please DO NOT make the mistake of thinking that a dog can reason with you, he cant, he is a dog!
I have often heard people say to their dogs, "I have told you not to do that!" as thought the dogs understood
In order to train your dog, it is YOU who must learn to think like a dog, NOT the dog who learns to think like a human!

You should have started about 9 months ago. But since you didn't, look around your area and find a good basic obedience class. Chances are good that you are not speaking his language. Most dogs learn fairly well, but they need to understand people. Training class is for you too.

Boxers are such great dogs! they have wonderful personalities.
depending on what kind of training it needs, leash, potty, basic commands. I would first recommend a book specifically designed for what exactly you want to focus on with your doggy. it's the cheaper alternative to some rather expensive professional training. always remember though to let your pup know YOU are the boss. reward good behavior like he/she saved your life ha ha and I found with mine that simply ignoring bad behavior works well. be consistent with what you do. you can't reward one day and forget the next you have to really work at it! :)

Basic Rules: Be patient and firm without being hard. Give positive feedback that sounds encouraging and affirming each time your dog learns some part of what you want him/her to learn. Talk with a smile and sunshine in your voice. Reward each time the dog responds correctly to a training command. Use the same words of command each time and repeat them until he learns the verbal command completely.
Above all be consistent.

There are lots of different training classes that you can take at places like Petsmart, or just a local trainer. You might want to look into these. They can help you solve many problems.

If you have had him for a year and had no luck , you probably going to need a professional trainer. Ask your veterinarian or a animal shelter for a trainer with a good reputation. Please don't use a choke collar, they really don't work.

choke chain collar and frequent controlled walks
you can get the choke collar at walmart or target or anywhere
don't think of it as hurting the dog, it is the best way to teach him you are the boss & boxers are smart dogs, he will not hurt himself, he will quickly realise not to pull on the collar.
