first of all, you need to buy special nail clippers that are maid specially for dogs, you can buy them at most pet stores. Cut only the tip, if your dog has white nails then look for what is called the "quick" it is a nerve that is inside the nail and can be seen in white nails when they are in bright light. Make sure to NOT cut the quick, cut just before it or you will hurt her.You can also walk her a lot on pavement, this will keep her nails short because it files her nails down and therefore will reduce how often you have to clip her nails.

they do make special nail trimmers that have a piece that is suppose to not let you cut the nail to far, but that does not always work. what you can do if you dog has white nails you can see where it starts to turn pink the pink part is called the quick and you want to cut right above that line. if you cut the quick she will bleed but you can stop the bleeding by putting some powder or baking powder on it. that will get it to stop. if the two nails are black and you can not tell where to cut just take the very tip off and look at the nail to make sure that you don't cut to much.
i would personally take your dog to your vet or a grooming to let them do it,because alot of lab's do not ho;d still for the owner to do it

Use a dremel with course attachment, either sandpaper type, or stone.
This is much easier and gives smoother surface to the nail. Start out doing just the tips, do once a week for a month, doing little more each time. As you do this the vein in the nail will shorten.

Also using this tool is less likely to cause bleeding if you go up to far on the nail.
I use it on my dogs, as well as my parrots.

It's not that hard if your fortunate enough to have a dog with light colored nails but the black ones can be difficult. Not all dogs - especially big dogs - are going to just sit there patiently while you nip bit by bit at them to ensure you don't get to the quick. Take it to a vet or a groomer (groomers are cheaper - usually only charge around $5.00) and make sure you leave the room. They have a cream or powder that stops any bleeding pronto if they do accidently get one too short. And, you leave the room. They way if they do nip a nail your pet won't associate it with you. When you show up, you'll be the hero coming to his/her rescue.

It is much harder with black nails as you can't see the quick. Cut them slowly, bit by bit. You can kind of see when you are getting closer to it as you can see it by the end of the nail. And make sure you have styptic powder or gel in case you should get a quick.

It works very well to just take off the hooked tip once a week. If you do it once a week, you can also use a dremel tool to just sand them down, as long as your dog does not have long hair that will get caught in the tool. Be careful and not have it on one nail for to long, as they will get hot! If the nail is long, and the quick is far down, it will help to get the quick back faster by sanding off the shiny surface around the bottom half of the nail. Some dogs find the dremel less objectionable than trimmers once they get used to it.

They have special dog nail clippers at the store, but make sure you don't cut them too short, or they will start bleeding. If you find it easier, you could also just file the nails. This takes longer, but some dogs are more comfortable with it.

Get a specialized nail clipper designed for dogs. Make sure you DO NOT CUT THE PINK PART (Quick) or that will make your dog bleed. You should start cutting your puppies nails to get him/her used to it as soon as possible. You can also go to groomer or pet store, usually runs about 10 dollars.

Have a professional do it...a vet, or a groomer. If you hurt them while doing it, they will bite you no matter how much they love you. It is a natural instinct. If you must do it yourself, you should have proper clippers and only nip off the tips of the nails. Good Luck.

Make sure the dog is calm and not scared.
I always hold my rabbit and calm him before I cut his nails. Pet him and let him know its okay.
