You might as well ask why are there so many different nations. The truth is that at the core we are all the same. Religion is only a tool to help us find our own road or path to Salvation or God or Enlightenment or Heaven OR WHATEVER IT IS WE SEEK. Our own best selves, say. People turn to religion for many reasons. Not always the best reasons. But who's to say? Or judge? Not me .
I don't believe there can be one main religion because there are too many differences. Although, there are coalitions of interfaith councils and organizations that try to focus on the similarities instead. Which is pretty awesome, if U ask me. So there are a lot who do get along. I think these interfaith coalitions have made a good start.

By the way, Jesus was a Jew. From what I understand of the language that the gospels were written in, it would be more accurate to say that Jesus said, "I am a way", not "the way". There was only one word for both "the and "a". There was no differentiation. I believe, yes, that he is a way. I also believe an individual can discover his own "path" or way to God Or Heaven or Salvation or Enlightenment or to his True Self.

I hope this helps.

There are many sects of Christianity because they are all made-up by humans. Each one claims to be the one-and-only true church of God, the only ones who have it right and everyone else has it wrong, and all claim to be told this information by the Holy Spirit. Either the HS is very, very confused (possibly a multiple personality disorder) or all those Christians are simply imagining everything. Since there is no proof for the existence of a HS, the logical conclusion is that they are making it up, trying to convince themselves and everyone else that they are going to their imaginary heaven to be with their imaginary skydaddy.

Don't know a whole lot about Judaism, but I do know that the reason they never threw in their lot with Christians is the simple reason that Jesus did not fulfill any of the signs that Jehovah told them to expect in their messiah. The messiah was to be a political and military leader who would lead the Jews to victory against their enemies and set up Israel as chief over all other nations--not some namby-pamby hippy guy preaching meekness and cowardice, then getting nailed to a cross. A crucifixion is never even mentioned in the Tanach, they had no concept for it. Thus, the really funny irony is that IF Jesus really had existed, and IF he truly was the promised messiah, we would all ruled by Israel right now, everyone would have converted to Judaism, and animal sacrifices would have been reinstated--precisely the opposite of what Christians preach!

why would Jews want to join the Christians? It is totally against our religion!! (its as if asking you why you dont become a muslim!)

the reason why there are so many different types of Jews is because after the temple was destroyed we were taken into exile and the Jews spread out over the entire world. So of course, if someone lives in a different country and culture for centuries long they will have customs. But the root of it all - the Torah - remained the exact same since it was given to us thousands of years ago.

There are some groups ex. reform and conservatives who decided that the Torah is too old fashioned or "outdated" and have changed it according to their liking. They are of course completely wrong with that since the Torah is an everlasting thing that will never become outdated.

last question first, jews don't believe that jesus is the messiah, and are still waiting for the messiah to show up. there are so many different branches, because some leaders don't agree with the doctrine set out by their parent group, and split and form their own religion, generally one that is more strict and less forgiving of its followers. Quite often, lately, its about the share of themoneys collected by the church. That'swhy there are so many pentecostal and southern baptist offshoots. Like tammy faye baker said" I couldn't find a job, so I had to start another church to support myself."

If you try to get a billion people to agree on something chances are some are going to disagree. Essentially that is why the religions are split off from eachother. I would watch the Life of Brian from Monty Python, it illustrates the synthesis of various religous sects and essentially how it happened.

For the same reason that there are many branches of Islam, buddhism, etc. In Christianity, people interpret portions of the Bible differently.

Jews are people who have not 'joined' Christianity because they reject Jesus Christ as the prophesied Messiah.

7 tribes of Israel, for the Jews, who never believed Christ was the prophet the bible spoke of, Christians on the other hand simply cannot get along, big power trip there, which explains a bit about who they are.

Matthew 24:4-14:

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come...

In any Religion there are branches. I guess it's because we are all human, you know what I mean. Even Atheists, disagree on some issues.
This concept even extends outside of religion.

Why so many branches? When you don't like something, break off from the church and make up your own rules. (Where would America be if that were not the case?)
