im not a fan of the ones with lids....my cat tends to play in there for a really long time if theres a lid on it, and all she does is scratch the lid, which gets annoying after a few minutes.
Try getting a matt for cats from the pet store, they have ones that have long pieces of plastic, that help the cat litter get out of your cats paws (why she/he scratches all the litter out), she will still kick some of the litter out of the box, but it will at least be contained to the matt for easy clean up

I hope you meant floor. Here's the thing: there really isn't a way to stop a cat from tracking or spreading litter around the house. You can put down as many prickly rugs you like, and the only answer is to vacuum often. However, if your problem is flinging or similar, you sort of have to trick them into doing it correctly. You can try a box with a swinging door on it, but my cats are smart, and they quickly figured out how to jar the door loose. I had to trick them ( and by trick I mean train them without they're knowledge) into not flinging litter out of the box anymore. What did is find different ways to chase them out of the box as soon as they were done with they're business. In doing this, eventually they learned to get in and get out, and not spend 10 minutes covering, sifting, and flinging. Just a note: be nice when you chase them out. If you traumatize them, they won't even use the box anymore, and then you'll have a much worse problem on your hands.

A clean up mat sounds like the way to go. You could also check and see if you could put less kitty litter in the box. Filling too full can cause the problem too.

Some litter boxes have sides that come inward, to prevent litter from spilling out. For the litter that gets on the outside, they have bristled mats to catch the loose litter, for easier clean-up.

We had to break down an get a large storage bin from Target. The huge one with very high sides. We put a few inches of litter in the bottom and she flings away, and no litter gets out. You have to get dustless litter though.

Have you tried one of those mats with the bristles? It brushes off their feet when they walk out so it doesn't track too much litter around.
