We have a flag out in front of our house. I always thought that proper flag etiquette was that unless it was illuminated it should be brought in at night. My husband says the rules have changed. I think he is just lazy. Please enlighten me.

No, proper flag etiquette dictates that a flag must be illuminated at night; if not, the flag should be taken down at dusk and can be re-flown at daybreak. Also, the flag should always be in good condition and never touch the ground when being raised or lowered.

The rules have not changed. A flag out at night must be illuminated. It should also be brought in during inclimate weather. We use a spotlight (one of the garden lights) directed up toward the flag. Hope this helps to convince your hubby.

I think technically it's supposed to be brought down at night, never touching the ground, and folded. I remember reading somewhere too that proper etiquette was to bring it down half staff then back up so far then down the whole way. There's a lot of formality to the way it's supposed to be done.

We leave ours out all night too!

The Flag of the United States is to be raised at daybreak, lowered at dusk, and taken in, folded without touching the ground, and retired when in dis-repair. If it is being displayed at half-mast, it must be raised briskly to full-mast, then lowered ceremoniously to half-mast for the day...then briskly raised to full-mast at day's end before lowering ceremoniously to be brought in. In addition, when being flown at half-mast, only the National Colors are flown, no state, county, municipal, or corporate flags are flown that day. Old Glory may be flown overnight, but ONLY IF illuminated and must be brought in during rain or other inclement conditions.

i think it is only proper to keep a flag outside if you have a light shining on the flag but if not then you should take it down every night.

You can have a flag displayed at night if there is a light shining on it. It can't get rained on either.
