I've been taking Dilantin for about a year now and I been having some side effects that are some what concerning, for example, achy joints, massive hair growth, mood swings, forgetfulness etc. Is there any more serious symptoms I need to be concerned about?

I looked up side effects in my Nursing Drug book. I did not see achey joints, excess hair growth, mood swings or forgetfulness as side effects of the Dilantin. The most common side effects are drowsiness, GI upset or vision problems.

You did not say why you are on Dilantin or what the dose is. My best advice to you is to write down your complaints and the next time you are at the Dr office, talk to him. He could better advise you as to what might be causing these other conditions. Good luck!

Maybe you should explore other options on what drug to take I know some people that are allergic to it and they had to get off of it because it was causing severe pains in joints and terrible mood swings and heart malfunctions. If you are still not sure look on line and look at the long term side effects of taking the drug. God Bless

sadly, for epilepsy, it is the drug with the best options for side effects - others have risks like flesh-eating disease, ick! my hubby's been experiencing the same things, as well as gums growing over his teeth and exhaustion, so we've been looking into it. at least there's nothing deadly on dilantin's list!

Here are some sites that may help you.
The last site is one of the best.
This is a complex drug with some serious side effects (as you know).

Best wishes.

When you get your prescription filled , the pharmacy should be giving you literature on this.
If they are not, ask. They can give you a print out.

when my dad was on it, it made him more confused, tired, off balance. when he first started on it they gave him too much and thought that he was depressed.
