The BAR is a little before my time, I don't know.

This is the statment on the XM8: "On 31 October 2005, the XM8 program was formally suspended, "pending further US Army reevaluations of its priorities for small caliber weapons, and to incorporate emerging requirements identified during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Government will also incorporate studies looking into current capability gaps during said reevaluation.""

The Army has focused on urban combat so long it lsot sight of other issues, such as the squad manuver engagement over large open areas. You need a weapon loadout in a squad that can take you from such long shooting engagements to clearing rooms. The 101st addressed this by issuing squad designated marksmen an m21/m14. There are other options, but the key to the XM8 was the XM25/29 which never worked. I say we buy Israeli.

The XM-8 rifle has been abandoned. It did not offer enough improvement over the M16 to make it worth the cost.
