Most dogs can find thier way home if even if they are MILES from it. The question you should be asking is if they dog WILL come home. If he's new to your home..he might not come back...or he might get snatched up by someone else. Get your animal microchipped...its the best way to keep track of your animal and to keep others from taking him/her.

I find it odd that some dogs can and some dogs cant.
But I have found that if you familiarize the dog with its surroundings daily it will be able to find its way back.
I have a german-shepherd husky mix who tends to get loose and run for up to a full day but she always finds her way back, usually very dirty, but always back.
I belive this is because when we started walking her we created a typical path for her to follow, we rarely changed it until she got too used to the surroundings and started taking her on diffrent trails. As of today, when she gets loose she always goes where we used to or currently do walk her.

Hi!! Let your dog get used to the new surroundings for about a week. Then, if your dog gets lose he should be able to get back because they have a VERY good memory and sense of smell. Hope I could help!!!

Maybe, it is more common for them to look for the place that they spent the most time at. If your dog is lost, call your newspaper, some of them put lost pet ads in for FREE. Canvas your neighborhood and knock on doors, put up flyers and call your local animal control agency as well as humane society and put in a lost report. That is the best way to get your lost pet home.

he if he does or has already run off. A old coon hunting trick I heard when a coon hunters dog gets to far off even a new pup and lost. They will {The owner of the dog} take a piece of their clothing like a shirt and leave it on the ground. The next morning or later that night he will be curled up on it. Sometimes they aren't to far off. you can leave even their blanky if they have one on the front porch or a place they could smell it.

Depends on the breed. We have a beagle, that starts tracking something, and won't find her way back.
