My husband is seriously thinking about joining the National Guard and I was wondering about all the benefits. Are there any conditions I should know? How long does AIT normally last? During basic training how often can they call home and do they get a break between basic training and AIT? If so how long? If you have any knowledge bout the National Guard please tell me all you know.

Not much contact during basic. Lots of letters though. There MAY be a SHORT break before AIT, but no promises. However, he'll have much more time to call you during that process. Nothing to worry about though. I certainly wouldn't let the kind of time we're talking about stop him from enlisting.

The benefits vary by state, but our here in Texas are pretty good (looking at getting back in that route myself). Great tuition reimbursement programs & such. Do some research. He'll either end up loving it or not.

A lot of good information has been offerd to you already.

The guard has lots of great benefits. In Illinois and Texas a member of the guard can go to any state college/university tuition free for as long as desired (up to the highest degree offered/attainable). That is amazing. What state do you live in?
During basic training you will not be able to talk on the phone but once or twice.
The length of AIT depends upon his MOS. Some are longer than others. What job is he considering?

different units have different rules -BUT you should limit calls yourself ,unless there is a reason to call, DON"T!basic is 54 days ,you can write DAILY and letters can be read and reread and smelled -with phone calls they will be made on a payphone within earshot of friends and people not so friendly,in AIT he can call daily and his schedule will be much more flexible.I had zero break between basic and AIT because of the legnth of the course ,it was short and FT.GORDON was only a few hours by bus from FT.JACKSON,so figure the longer the AIT the more likly it is to have break-i dont know your age or child situation but you will need to be a team player, learn the enlisted wives support channel and USE IT- learn to pay bills, write checks and don't forget THE COMMISARY and other GREEN CARD BENNIES you are entitled to-while he is on active duty you got some cool stuff coming to you-you will be suprised how fast 54 days goes by-good luck and good training-HOOAH!

uncomplicated education for the nationwide look after is largely an same as uncomplicated education for lively responsibility. Your husband will be able to make a telephone call at the same time as he comments in only to inform you that he were given there. at the same time as he calls you, ask for his address because you'll maximum in all probability be chatting with him through letters. at the same time as he has been there for some weeks, he will be allowed to apply the phone. tell him to consult drill sergeant about asking for go away for once you've your infant. they'd enable him come abode. uncomplicated education is studying uncomplicated soldier skills consisting of the thanks to positioned on the uniform, taking pictures, and getting conscious of the how the military applications. At AIT, he will study his certain pastime in the military. Now adays, extremely a lot anybody in the military is deploying at a at the same time as or yet another. If he has a three 3 hundred and sixty 5 days dedication, there's a good probability he will deploy. it really is demanding for you i understand yet be as efficient and supportive as obtainable. issues receives more advantageous and the military will be an outstanding career for him.

Being in the Reserves or National Guard will increase his chances of deploying to Iraq (you will be very proud of him). The Reserves and National Guard are deploying approximately 80% of their people to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Active Duty is about 20%.

As far as benefits go, for a family, the Reserves and National Guard only covers him while on Active Duty, unless he purchases the Reserve Components (including National Guard) coverage for his family (expensive). On Active Duty, it is 100%. Plus he can go to college for free on Active Duty and have money after the Active Duty to continue his education. As a family man, I always recommend Active Duty. It provides a home, food, income, job security, medical and dental benefits all everyday, not somedays. Plus as a Guardsman, he will not collect the full housing allowance unless he serves 180 days on Active Duty. In San Francisco, at my rank, that is a difference of $2812.00 a month and $795.00 a month. Large difference.

Also, the Guard get their college paid by a State fund. Many states, having to save money, cut it from the Guard's college money first.
