Yes religion is necessary because it exist, everthing that exist is necessary. Life is a game played by spirits without memory of true self before incarnating on this planet. Religion serves a purpose because it provides the gamer if necessary something to overcome on the way to finding the real truth of reality.

Everyone believes in something even if that something is in nothing it is still a measure of faith in something being the answer to life's questions. Religion(s) provide common agreements in belief toward a common Deity or beginning and an answer to questions that are most times beyond human conception. True for many religion is a scapegoat and for others a crutch and yet still for others justification for certain acts and actions. If a Religion that teaches that there is but one way to salvation or enlightens is wrong then the result for believing in that doctrine would be that when everything is finally revealed one would say I'm just wrong or may just not know about anything. If though one of the religions, of the world, is right and that religion is the true way to salvation and the only way to "make it" then failure to consider that or accept that specific religion would doom on to eternal (never ending) punishment or actions for disbelief. Being human ours is to ponder the possibilities and make our decisions upon what we believe even though that belief may rest only in Faith and not something you can put your hand upon but a knowledgeable hope of the heard and mind.
Is Religion necessary? For some yes for others it becomes the height of skepticism.

like a fish needs a bicycle.
It's not for everybody, for some. Those without cast ties to something else, shopping, science, logic. It's part of the human condition wanting to believe there is something bigger than ourselves. But religion is not a necessity for life, you can live without it, some may say you are better off without it in some parts of the world. Easy to say you won't die without it, but you may die because of it. It has been described as sustenance for the soul. If you believe you have a soul maybe it is necessary for you. If you don't believe then it is not necessary and may get annoyed by people thinking that is necessary and they know what's best for you.
I don't think it is necessary, and like many things in life it's something that can bring great and marvelous things into peoples' lives but also pain, suffering and death.
So is it necessary, that's a good question, it all depends on the individual!

Were it not for the Religious Right, we'd have a Democrat in office right now.
That said, religion is necessary, for some people. There are those that swear by it (no pun intended) for whatever reason. I know people that have had "religious experiences" and are faithful to the core.
The others, mostly from my point of view, are hypocritical.
All the way up to our President. All for families and religion, but blasts the hell out of Iraq and our own troops over there dying. And the start of it all, allegedly, was the terrorist attacks on 9/11 - also religiously motivated.
Here's how I see it...
When I was a kid, religion was drilled into my head. By no fault of my own, I believed, because it's what I was told to believe.
When I went to bed at night, I might get a fairy tale, or I might get a Bible story...
Do you think if it was the fairy tale about a man who lived inside of a whale and it was religion that Jack built a beanstalk today, you would know the difference?
I wouldn't.
Just because adults told you it was true and they scared you into believing it, at pain of death, at pain of burning in hell.
Gov. Jesse Ventura once said that religion was for weak minded people, and that they draw strength in numbers, or something to that effect. I'm with the Gov. on that one.
Do I believe in God? Probably not. Who knows?
But is religion necessary? Definitely not.
Religion is killing this country, our troops, our economy, and our future.
edit:
------
I went back and read the other posts that had popped up in the meanwhile of my typing this.
One sticks out, the one screaming that JESUS is the answer and "I don't know about religion but GOD is necessary"
To them I asak this:
How do YOU know?
You feel it, you believe it, you have faith in it - but how do you KNOW? What makes you so damn sure you're right? Why is your God "THE" God? Because someone told you so?
Fact: read the gospel. 4 books that speak about Christ's rising on the 3rd day. 4 completely different accounts. Not idle differences, blatantly different. Also, when Christ was on the cross - He spoke to one next to him and said "today you will be with me in the Kingdom of Heaven" Right? I mean this is verbatim here, you can't dispute it if your God is THE God.
But read on, gentle viewer. Christ decended into hell, and the 3rd day he rose.
So how was this clown in heaven with him that day?
I could go on and on. The point here is your book, the one you blindly profess as the Word, and that everyone NEEDS Jesus is full of said hypocracy.
That's what's scary to me about most religious people. They follow God because a preacher, pastor, bishop, reverend or priest tells them to. They don't even KNOW the Book they are supposed to be upholding.
These people are the biggest hypocrites of them all.

Sure religion is not required. But there r some points u need to check. Religion inscribes some good values in us. Religion teaches us something which we should know. And also it changes the way of our thinking but in right direction. That is the different thing that many times religion followers don't act according to their religion.

even if religion does not exist, man has to invent one.Because no social norm has ever yet disciplined man in someways , then time and culture varies, if there is no religion or a universal standardized law. It will always be fight for the fittest and most cunning, which means annihilation of the human race.

Try spelling correctly.
Anywho, look into the science, our brains are hardwired to look for meaning (i.e. religion).
Aside from that, a large number of people are caught into their religions by brainwashing and fervent talks and by pressure. Combined, they cause people to be religious, or at least claim affiliation.
The science is some interesting stuff. I'm a Christian myself, so it's not necessarily blasphemous stuff for people of any religion to research.

If you want to go to heaven SALVATION is necessary, I dont know about the vague category of religion, God gave this world Jesus and he died for our sins so that we would not perish but have everlasting life, he asks us to believe that he gave his son and that through him you will be saved, NOW I don't know about religion being necesarry, but believing in God is, some religions are far from the truth and to me on a personal note are not necessary, they don't do anything for you, but believing in Jesus and God does.

Well, my spirituality is very necessary to me. My kids and I pray to God every night and we are positive that its the best way for us. To each his own. I dont force my kids to go to church, because that doesnt make you a believer in your heart. I believe religion is not as important as your spiritual relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God bless.
