I am Mom with one teenager and one pre-teen--I do sometimes spank them--and I think it is helpful. They of course disagree as do all of the "experts".

The topic of spanking is like religion and politics... people will either agree with you or totally flip out against you.

I believe that some children respond positively to spanking... that is their behavior improves not that they agree with the punishment. Contrary to what many people say on these forums, spanking is not illegal in any state in the union. But there is a limit as to what constitues spanking and what is abuse, which is illegal.

I know for a fact that being spanked as a teen is no fun, but I didn't turn out bad or dysfunctional, although the same cannot be said for my friends who were never spanked. I wouldn't advocate spanking someone for the first time once they were a teen, but if you've been using spanking as a form of discipline all along I don't think its inappropriate to spank a teen.

Yes, I am just a child myself, but I think that it is important to talk about MY views about spanking. I would say the paddle is the easiest for the parents to choose. And ALWAYS pull their pants down. Jeans cut out 90% of the blow and underware alone is still 10-20%! So ALWAYS spank bare-bottom!

As far as privacy, the best way to do it is close ALL the curtains and invite all the direct family to the spanking! (dad, mom, brothers, sisters) This creates major emaressment! Also if the offense they are paying for was against a family member, let them have a swing or two at the end!

I would say the best position would be to have your child kneel down on the ground and lay their chest across a chair. Kneel next to your child, and serve spankings.

I would say the best time to spank would be in the evening right before bed, then you can send your child to bed right after-wards.

I'm 49 and also a firm believer in spanking kids but yours are just a bit to old I think to be getting spankings now. Maybe not the pre-teen one but the other one,yes that is too old. Ground them, take their phone at home away from them, no comp, no going out for a week or what ever it takes. There has been a many of times that I have gone to the stores and listened to a child throwing a fit and parents doing nothing. Wished more parents believed in spanking their kids now days, be far less problems out there now than there is!!!!!!!!!!

I Have 2 pre-teens and a teen and for extreme punishment spankin is still #1. They don't think it helps but I have seen the action stop after a spanking where I don't when I take privileges away.
I always try and make sure the punishment fits the crime.
Not taking out the trash no t.v.
fight with siblings no weekend privileges
broken items, trips to the principle, spankings
So no i don't think teenagers are to old to be spanked if the do the crime they do the time so to say

Teenagers are more likely to respond to losing privileges and/or a consequence and reward system rather than spanking or hitting. Natural consequences are the best discipline. After all, discipline is really about guiding the child down the right path, not punishing them for misbehavior.

Set out some basic rules:

If your teen doesn't do X (i.e walk the dog), then Y happens (i.e lose phone time).

Make sure the rules are listed where your children can see them.

Be consistent.

Well I believe that corporal punishment isn't a way to get children to listen, love, or respect. It's easy to result to violence because it's a cop-out and doesn't get to the root of any behavioral problem that the parent is trying to "solve" thorough spanking. There are contructive ways of disciplining children that can either be learned in counseling, by reading a book by experts on child psychology, or taking a good parenting class. Good luck.

I think that if you feel they should be spanked, then why not do it?!?! The last time I was spanked was when I was 17 and now as a mom I feel that I will do it until I feel otherwise. Of course, your kids are going to disagree...

A parent's job is a tough one of balancing love and discipline. The teenage period is a transition from childhood into adulthood.

There is no clear boundary when this transition is going to happen so a good guide would be that one should use the cane less and less, and use care and concern more and more.

It may seem contradictory, but a cane is only good when it is seldom used. What your children will appreciate most from you when they grow up, is your unconditional love for them. That is the ultimate. We need to let go, so that they will grow. It's ironic but true.

Hi, I think it depends on the child. If the child will just get angry at you for being spanked then I think talking it out would be a better method. However, if it does work then you can spank as long as its not done out of anger, rather, for the benefit of the child to learn and grow from their mistake.

Too old for spanking and you don't stick to your guns with discipline. You should be in charge of them, not the other way around. You give in too easy with grounding. Make them do chores, make them work to get their privileges back. Don't hide the cell phones, keep them with you. Password lock the internet and the TV. You let them walk all over you! MAN UP!
