You have to have a mp3 conversion program such as iTunes and you have to import the CD onto your computer's hard drive, when you're importing the CD, you should have the preferences set to .mp3 conversion, because sometimes it's on .mp4 in iTunes.
here's where you do it in iTunes:
Advanced - Convert selection to mp3
If it's not on mp3, you can change it in iTunes - preferences - advanced - importing

You just need a CD ripper and an mp3 encoder. Some rippers integrate the encoder, some not. So just go and look on you favorite search engine for CD ripper, download it and look at the installation guide to see if you need of not an mp3 encoder.
Features are varying from one to an other as well as quality. Some sites you will find during your search are drawing comparisons between different rippers and encoders.
Just be care full that some are free, other not and that depending on your country legislation it might not be allowed.

Its through a process called encoding, which is just a fancy way to compress large amounts of infomration, in this case wav data. I don't have the formula that is used for mp3 (i believe it is proprietary), but it works on the same principal that video compression for images works with gif and jpg vs bmp

It's done in two steps: ripping and encoding.
Ripping is the conversion of a CDDA (Compact Disc Digital Audio) track to a data stream, usually a .WAV file. This .WAV file is an exact represenation of the original disc audio and can be burned into a bit-for-bit replica of it. There are many programs which do ripping; one of them, named after its concern with reading everything with 100% correctness, is called "cdparanoia".
The second step is encoding. In encoding, the audo "image" of the .WAV file is stripped of inaudible or barely-audible redundancy and converted to a .MP3 file. One common open-source encoder is called "lame".

I would recommend downloading iTunes at http://www.itunes.com
Then, go to the iTunes preferences and click on "Advanced" then "Importing." You will be able to change the import format to MP3.
After that, just put your CD in the computer and hit "Import" in iTunes. It will download the songs from your CD and put them in the MP3 format.
