I've done this. Funny story about that actually. True story:
I was standing with my kids waiting for the bus, enter two women. Man is passed out in the corner of the bus overhang. Woman starts going off on some crazy rant about the destruction of New Orleans being a Sign from God, etc. etc. and starts handing out pamphlets. When I refuse, she makes a scene about how I'm going to burn in hell. When I ask her to please not cause a scene in front of my children, she yells all the louder, so I and the kids leave, and go back into the store. All through this, did anyone check on the man? Of course not.
So I pulled out my cell phone and called 911, and an ambulance came by to pick him up.
Talk about your Chrisitan love....

I am not from New York City. First I would gasp and then I would go check on the person. If I had my cell phone, I would call 911. If the person was already dead, I'd probably cry from shock and sadness. If the person was still alive, I'd do whatever I could to help. I found out that I'm a person that doesn't freeze when critical situations arise, and that is why I have given you this answer.

I have seen people laid out on the sidewalks of NYC and I've done nothing. I figure they're drunk and passed out or asleep, even if they are laying at odd angles. I don't know for sure. They could have been dead.

The bible commands to show love and compassion to fellow man. We should use the example of the Good Samaritan. Jesus said what we do for others,we are doing for him. Providing, food, clothing shelter, medical care....etc It may be helping one of God's angels and do not even know it.

The first thing I'd do is call for help, then I'd see if I could lend a hand.

I'd quietly step over him and be on my way. I wouldn't want to disturb him.
