In my case, it is not that I wish I didn't do the remodel, it is that I wish I would have done more. I remodeled my kitchen, new floor, appliances, lighting, raised the ceiling, granite countertops, re-did the cupboards, added beadboard, wall paper & paint, etc. But, I kept the same configuration which is the typical U shaped kitchen. It is bordered by a nook on the right side and with a breakfast bar on one side open to the family room. Looking at it now, I realize we eat only at the breakfast bar or in the dining room and the nook is never used for dining.
I should have extended the kitchen into the nook space and added an island with seating in that space. As it is now, there is a beautiful glass topped table with an antique urn base and wrought iron chairs that are never used! In a sense it is a waste of space that I could have made more functional with storage and still had the same seating capeabilities with an island.

I did my entire house.
New bathrooms, new floors, refurbished kitchen, new applicances, added walls and a closet, painted inside & out.
I am at a huge advantage living on the border where construction prices are pretty competitive. I didn't spend a fortune, fortunately!
I found a contractor through a friend, saw his work and hired him. He really turned out to be a gem. Very clean work, reliable, very fair prices. I also saved on finding and supplying the materials. He just charged me for labor cost. In total, I have spent about $30,000 with labor and material. The home is 2,600 sq. feet.
The key is to find a reliable and affordable contractor and do some of the leg work yourself. You supply materials, you can save quite a lot if you do. Make sure to get references and make sure to look at his jobs on site. Hope this helps
Have no regrets here! Only the mess we had to deal with for a while, but its all cleaned up now

All the small projects we have done I feel is money well spent. Our big project was a nightmare (we added a granny unit). This involved permits and lots of inspections,we're still not done with all the changes they want done.My take on it is this, try to make improvements but fly under the radar of the local building dept.

Not yet...We're in the process of renovating and I'm really stressed out about all the money we're pouring in. I hope I don't regret it when it's done...
