I'm going on a roadtrip and need something that doesn't perish that represents California in some way.

Sour Dough Bread. Go to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Get some clam chowder or oyster stew in a Sour Dough Bread Bowl. Observe how they serve it. Take a couple of loaves of Sour Dough Bread home, and serve the same treat to your friends.

You'll need a cooler and may not make it all the way there but I still think it is a good idea!!!

Californian wines are fairly well-known if your friends are conisseurs; I would personally appreciate fresh fruit (e.g. strawberries, peaches) but you specifically said non-perishable...

It really depends on what part of CA you'll be in but if you're near Gillroy get garlic and if you're near napa get wine.

almonds, dried fruits, wine chocolate (giradelhi, sharfenberger) but if you want to impress send them overnight some cheese!
