My mom worked in collections and sometimes , they could. She liked doing it to people that were really mean and hateful to her when she tried to help them make a plan out. So, first try to make a plan, second, don't be hateful. However, come to think of it, I seem to remember now that it was only if the card company and checking account were one and the same

Yes, they can freeze your account only if they have access to your accout number. If they feel you have not met your "term of conditions", they may do that so they can recieve their payment promptly.
