People of this generation are too quick to look for a problem that they can solve with medication. Just let the child know when he/she is acting other than acceptable ways. If that doesn't work, use firm discipline and promote good manners such as yes sir or no ma'am answers to elders.

If a child is hyperactive and it effects their daily lives the child should be evaluated by a psycologist. ADHD is a neurological problem that can only be diagnosed by a series of tests but at least two psychiatrists. If someone gives the diagnosis without the tests you should be weary. Not all hyperactivity is due to ADHD and it isn't fair to self diagnose a child.

because parents sit their children in front of the television too much rather than giving them physical activities that exercise and wear them out......school staffs are overwhelmed with budget problems and their hands have been tied regarding disciplinary cases.....therefore any child exhibiting excessive energy is dubbed ADD.....promoted by the pharmeceutical companies out to make a buck and doctors too willing to prescribe those meds. Plus the education system in this country is so far behind the intelligence of today's children...a great number of them are just plain bored, and a bored child will find a way to entertain himself/herself. Children simply need to be more challegened both at home and in school and that nasty little term will disappear.

Well, ADHD can only be diagnosed by a professional doctor. And just by saying a child is 'hyperactive' does not make it so.

Because in this day in age everyone is quick to medicate. My 17 month old bounces off the wall and I think she is hyperactive but I just let her run herself out! Easier and BETTER them meds!

Personally I would never put dogs like that around kids even if i did try to have them trained. it's not worth the risk. I know a kid who had his face bitten off by the family pet - a dog they had trained to the 9's - it was given the all clear to be around kids and 3 years later the boy grabbed the dog's rear end unexpectedly and CHOMP! please don't take this the wrong way, but it astounds me how some people don't think before they act. If you wanted children why would you choose those dogs?

We're a nation stuck on the pharmaceutical tit. Time to wean People! Get real! I jumped from Smurfs to Legos to jump rope to reading the cereal box within 30 seconds and know what? SO DID EVERY OTHER FREAKIN KID IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!! Quit diagnosing every little thing. We're not categories, we're not labels, we're people, and people start out as these fabulous little undiagnosable things called children. Turn off the t.v., open the doors, let your kiddo breathe breathe breathe and yell yell yell and you, fantastic parent you, love every fast-paced second of it.

I worked in a mental health clinic for 10 years. Parents are way too quick to self diagnosis ADD and ADHD. Ever wonder why 20 years ago kids were described as busy and now it's hyper? Busy is a good term, hyper is negative. I think parents who are treating their hyper children with medication to calm them and improve their so-called concentration are going to eventually regret it.

ADD is so overdiagnosed its ridiculous. I have twin boys who were very active as toddlers. Some kids just have a lot of energy. They got along just fine without any drugs.
