It explodes as the liquid expands larger than the can.

If it's in a can rarely will it blow the can and if it does it's so late in the freezing process there's little mess. Bottled soda is a different story. The bottle usually breaks near the neck because the ice usually forms there first or it floats up. The caps usually hold it there job to hold even if it's shaking vigorously. Hope this helped.

i don't recommend trying this at home without Mom or Dad's permission. as soft drinks are mostly water, which we learn(ed) in 8th grade science expands when it freezes, they tend to explode in the freezer. i can attest to this from personal observation...when i was young, my own mom put a can of pop into the freezer of the old frigidaire, and a short while later, we heard something strange...turns out the pepsi had exploded.

The carbonated soda will slowly expand as it starts to freeze. It will burst through an aluminum can if left in the freezer too long, leaving a pretty good mess.

One time in the middle of the winter, in 1980, I left a glass pepsi bottle full of pop in my sisters Datsun. The darn thing froze while we were at work and exploded. It blew a hole in the cloth in the ceiling of her car. She was totally ragged off at me. If we had been in the car when that happened, it may have done some serious damage to one of us.

Can or bottle? If can, the water content of the soft drink will expand, the can will burst. If not completely frozen, you will get a mess. If completely frozen, you will get a mess when it thaws.

the can bursts because water expands when it freezes so the carbonated water in the soda expands and the pressure busts the aluminum can. And you open the freezer and say craaaap and spend 20 mins. cleaning it up.

It swells, the can pops open, soft drink leaks out, and you get a sticky mess in the freezer.

I would not do this. It may explode or at least come open and spill out all over.
