Mercedes Benz 190D. It is a four door sedan with a 4 cylinder diesel engine. Gets about 30-35 miles per gallon and is very comfortable for a "smaller" car. Manufactured in Germany and imported to the US in mid to late 80's.

The succesor models are designated as the "C" Class.

The "E" Class also had some diesel models. Both sedan and Wagon.

The "S" Class also had a diesel sedan in the early '90's. But those are in the $15-30K range. The mid 80's 300SD's had both 5 and 6 cylinder models. The 6 cylinder models are the better ones. 86-87. These can be picked up for between $2500 and $6000 for a really clean one. Big sedan that gets 25-30 mpg. Not to shabby.

Why do I say MB? Safety record. Reliability. Comfort. Economy.

I work for a nissan dealer so i see alot of used cars go through the shop and toyota's are by far the most reliable second would be honda but for the money you are wanting to spend i would have to say toyota corolla would be a good way to go. always have a used car check by someone you trust if you dont know anyone take it to the local dealer and see if they will do a free 100 point inspection. good luck and be carefull lots of crazy people on the roads.

I would seriously check out early 90's Volvos. Great cars! Very dependable, safe, good on gas. Honda, Honda, Honda, Honda, people keep saying. They are SO overpriced compared to everything else, to me at least they are not worth the extra expense, and they are also terribly expensive on insurance compared to other similar cars. Reliable and cheap on gas they are, but they cost you an arm and leg in other areas.

They'll have the most reliable car on display when hell opens an ice rink. Buy used, low milage, maintained if possible, or at least close. Every car made has its ups and downs.
