I was told not to get clumping litter for my kitten because it will stick to his paws and get over the house and stuff and was told to not get one that has odor control chemicals (not sure why about that one). I wasn't sure so today I bought the crystal kind. I get my kitten Saturday so I have time to exchange it for something else if it is not a good one. Any thoughts?

Choosing the right litter is not an absolute. It is usually a matter of preference. Scoop is usually better as it makes the cleaning easier. Make sure to scoop at least once a day to keep it fresh. Cats can also make the decision for you. If they do not like the litter you choose, they will not use the box. A cats sense of smell is about 1000 times more sensitive than a humans. So some of the litter has too strong a fragerence. I work with a cat rescue group and we have always used scoopable litter with no problems. This is true for me personally as well. However, I have also used shredded up newspaper for 4-6 week old kittens just learning how to use the litter box then gradually adding litter to it. Your kitten should be at least 6 weeks old to be adopted etc, so it is probably already litter box trained and ready for straight litter. I use different scoopables at my house, including store brands like Walmart and Target. You will have to try them to find what you and the kitten like. Good luck with your new kitten. Shahin

It's true.. do not get the clumping litter for kittens. You will need to use the old fashion litter till the kitten reaches a few months old. I have had 13 cats at one time (includes kittens) and for the older cats.. the best clumping litter has been Arm & Hammer Super Scoop. It's inexpensive, really eliminates odors, and very easy to scoop. I've tried many different brands and this one by far has worked the best. Good luck with your kitty =)

We like the crystals. They absorb the liquid (turning yellow so you can see when they're saturated) and dehydrate the solids, which can then be scooped out and put in the toilet/garbage. For one cat, the crystals can last a whole month... just stir it around when you empty out the solids. We found that the odor is low, clean up is easy and the cat likes it. The biggest problem is tracking but if you get the broken shard like ones instead of the round balls this is reduced to a minimum. Oh, you will want to watch the dust when you change it... best done outdoors/ in a room you don't mind making dust in

Honestly, I have been using maxx clumping litter for years. I have always had more then one cat, and it keeps the odour down. They do end up dragging the litter around a bit though, but thats because I haven't bothered to put down a mat or anything. It smells almost like cinnimon when its fresh too. Dont' worry about exchanging, try it out, and if the crystals work for you, then keep using them. Everyone has different opinions on what they like. Good luck with your new little bundle of fur.

Keep your crystals and see if you like them. I will NEVER use anything else again. The crystals dry up the urine and it doesn't smell. The feces dry up into hard lumps and are easily removed. If you have one kitten - you do not have to replace the litter for a month.

If you have the crystals that are all different shapes they are much more convenient than the round ones. If any of the round ones get out of the box they roll around all over.

I use the clumping litter myself and have done so since my cats were kittens. I never had a problem with it sticking to their paws since I clean it often. If you really need to know about it all call some vets in your area and get their opinions.

When they are little, you can get the clay litter or Feline Pine (which comes in pellets). The vets office also sells one that is made from paper fibers that works, too. (That one is used most often after declawing surgery to keep the litter out of the paws). My favorite litter for my adult cats is the Tidy Cat Small Spaces clumping litter.

I've used the Arm & Hammer brand since my 2 cats were small kittens and never had a problem. They don't have accidents and they haven't shown any signs of getting ill. I believe that you will have stray bits of kitty litter outside the box no matter what brand of litter you buy. That's my humble opinion. Put a rug under their box so that any loose bits will stay there and then you can roll the rug up and shake it outside. Nobody said raising pets would be a piece of cake... =)

The crystals are actually made of a chemical that is extremely bad for your cat. The regular clumping litter is kind of bad for them too if they ingest it, but it's better than the crystals.

We have 2 cats, a brother and sister. They are 2 years old. We have tried everything, and I mean everything and it was all just okay. Until we tried the crystal litter. The clouds parted, the sun came out and it didn't stink! Use crystal cat litter with confidence, it will change your life!
