A good voice teacher will be able to show you the proper way to sing. She can give you exercises to strengthen your voice and range. You'll learn how to support your breath with your diaphragm, how and when to breathe during a song, and the proper way to warm up.

If you know anyone who has studied (with good results), ask for a recommendation. If not, check out the local theatre or community college in your area. If you are still in school, ask your music teacher for recommendations.

And for goodness' sake, don't smoke. Don't even go to places where people smoke. Keep yourself healthy and fit. Singing requires a tremendous amount of aerobic capacity. Try walking or even running, if you can.

Good luck and keep singing!

First of all, do NOT scream. That'll injure your "vocal cords" (the proper term is vocal folds as they are not cords, but muscles). You really don't need to strengthen your vocal folds. You need to strenthen your diaphragm. Do lots of breathing exercises.

If you are young and still going through puberty, your vocal folds might not be quite lined up with each other yet. That causes a bit of a "breathy" tone. Don't worry about that. You'll grow out of that.

Also, find a voice coach/ teacher. They will be able to give you very valuable advice on how to improve your singing. Good luck!

You should use your vocal cords on a regular basis -- speaking or singing; however, without wearing them out with each use. The diaphragm directly controls the flow of air through the vocal cords; however, many other muscles assist in this process. I have found that regular aerobic exercise and exercises that strengthen the face and mouth muscles, ie, using a facial flexer like the one sold on QVC, help to make a "stronger", steadier, vocal sound. As many sit-up's per day as you can stand is good, and exercises to build the upper body, ie, lifting bar bells or pulling therabands, are good. I believe that strengthening vocal sound is dependent upon strengthening almost all muscles of the body.

DON'T scream! Screaming, or even singing in a harsh or unnatural voice (like a lot of rock singers do) can strain your vocal chords and eventually cause permanent damage. Nodes, like scars or calluses, develop and prevent the vocal chords from meeting up and vibrating the way they need to to produce sound. In the long term, you could lose the ability to sing at all, or even talk.

The above advice about practice, breathing, scales, etc. is great.

Singing requires support and technique, both of which must be learned over time. It requires breath control and the ability to relax and sort of allow the music to come out of you, rather than focusing on MAKING the music. I would suggest getting vocal lessons; a trained professional can help you learn how your body makes music and how to build upon your natural talent. Above all else, enjoy the music and keep singing -- as with any skill, you only get better with practice!

Try learning to project your voice more by using your diaphragm. If your voice is weak, then you are probably not giving it enough support, and support comes from the diaphragm area (below the lungs, above the stomach, just about at the bottom of the rib cage). Good luck.

Definitiely DON'T Scream. You need to work on your breath support, often times, people believe that their chords are weak, when infact they're breathing improperly or their technique is wrong.

Breathe deep from the diaphragm and open your mouth, but don't spread. Scales and long tones will help.

try to project all of what you sing from the diaphragm, if you scream it'll sound bad, and if you just use ur regular voice only raised, it'll be just like talking over a loud crowd in rythym.
