Not to offend, but QuickTime is one of the worst players out there. I much recommend VideoLAN, available free from the following link.

However, it is most likely due to your system lacking the proper CODEC to decipher the AVI file properly. doom9 (also below) has links to most every CODEC created.

Play with windows media player or get a tool to convert to your prefered format.
I hate Quicktime...You have probably set it prefernce to play all media types.
Get rid of quicktime...it su@ks

try the k-lite div x pack or do an update 3rd party software in quick time and it should download he relevant plug-in for you
